About the Journal

Mission and scope

Cadernos de Linguística (Cad_Lin) is a Platinum Open Access journal sponsored by the Brazilian Linguistics Association - Abralin. It publishes rigorously peer-reviewed scholarly research that makes a significant contribution to our understanding of human language. Cad_Lin follows the “publish, review, curate” framework and operates under a continuous publication model: manuscripts must be previously deposited in a preprint repository before submission and, if accepted, will be posted online as soon as the production process is completed. The journal publishes articles accepted and presented at events organized by Abralin, theme issues and registered reports. Cad_Lin supports the concept of open science which seeks to open up the entire research and publication process even further, including open data, open protocols, open code and transparent peer review. Besides, it seeks to encourage responsible behaviors in research, and to promote a research culture that supports collaboration, diversity, inclusion, and openness. Cad_Lin actively invests in research culture in a variety of ways.

Governance and Finances

Cad_Lin is governed by an editorial board, with Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors overseeing the peer-review process. Abralin funds technical support for the journal’s online platform. Although editorial roles are honorary, operational costs such as platform hosting, DOI registration, and promotional activities are covered by Abralin. The journal’s finances rely on membership dues, ensuring long-term sustainability and accessibility.. To learn more, visit Background, Governance, and Finances.

Frequency

The journal operates under a continuous publication model. We publish one volume per year. A volume may be subdivided into numbers that are published continuously.

Open Science

The Open Science movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared, and public scientific practice. In line with these guidelines, Cad_Lin adopts an open access policy, requiring the publication of preprints on a preprint server that supports public commenting, and the sharing of analysis data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials in open repositories. In addition, the evaluation process of Cadernos de Linguística is open and transparent. At Cad_Lin, we support and collaborate with organisations and initiatives that promote Open Science practices and policies.

Diversity Statement

Cad_Lin is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of linguistics. We believe that diversity strengthens scholarship, and we are committed to publishing research from scholars with various institutional affiliations, nationalities, and career stages. We particularly welcome submissions from scholars who have been historically underrepresented in academia due to their race, ethnicity, gender identity, disability, or other protected characteristics. We encourage authors to engage with and cite sources that have been historically excluded from academia and to incorporate the work of scholars based in the countries about which they are writing. We are committed to eliminating bias in our editorial and review processes and continually strive to identify and implement best practices for scientific publishing. We recognize that biases can exist at all stages of the publication process and are actively working to increase the diversity of our editorial board and reviewers to ensure a fair and equitable review process. Cad_Lin is dedicated to promoting a welcoming and inclusive research culture that supports collaboration, diversity, and openness. We are committed to ensuring that all members of our community feel valued, respected, and included.

Ethics and Good Practices

Cad_Lin Journal is committed to maintaining high ethical standards and good publication practices, and its editorial conduct is guided by the international principles of the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. Therefore, editors, reviewers, and authors follow guidelines for their work in the journal before, during, and after the publication process of each issue.

Editors are responsible for upholding these principles throughout the editorial process and commit to investigating potential plagiarism or text recycling in manuscripts through detection tools. Editors are careful to select reviewers who do not have conflicts of interest with the authors, and submission decisions are made based on reviewers' evaluations, the journal’s focus, the manuscript’s originality, and adherence to author guidelines. When an editor submits their own work to Cad_Lin, an independent review process is put in place, and any conflicts of interest are fully disclosed. While editors may suggest relevant citations to enhance an article, they do so without making them a condition for acceptance and avoid suggesting citations to the journal itself.

Reviewers play a key role in maintaining Cad_Lin’s standards. They are expected to respond promptly to invitations, either accepting or declining in a timely manner to ensure a smooth review process. Reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest with a manuscript, declining the review if such conflicts exist. Additionally, they are asked to notify the editors if they detect similarities between the manuscript under review and other published works of which they are aware. Reviewers receive guidance on acceptable tone and language in their feedback, and editors reserve the right to edit or withhold reports that deviate from the journal’s standards for professionalism.

Upon submission, authors declare that their work is original, unpublished, and free from plagiarism or unauthorized text recycling. If the manuscript includes images, authors must confirm that they have obtained all necessary permissions. In multi-author submissions, each author’s contribution should be identified according to the CRediT taxonomy. Authors are also required to disclose any financial support relevant to their research. Cad_Lin allows authors to withdraw their submission at any stage before publication if they choose not to proceed. Once peer review is complete, authors must revise the manuscript in response to reviewer feedback, explaining any suggestions they choose not to implement. Finally, the journal will not proceed with publication without the explicit final approval of all authors.

For studies involving human subjects or data, Cad_Lin requires adherence to the ethical principles of respect, beneficence, and justice, as set forth in the Belmont Report. Such studies must receive approval from an appropriate ethics committee, with a statement in the article including the committee’s name and approval number. Participant identities should be anonymized whenever possible, and informed consent must be obtained from participants or their legal guardians.

All potential conflicts of interest, whether financial, political, academic, or commercial, must be individually disclosed by authors and reviewers. If conflicts exist, they should be clearly listed. Cad_Lin has a clear procedure for handling undisclosed conflicts both before and after publication. By upholding these standards, Cad_Lin promotes a fair, transparent, and ethical approach to publishing, safeguarding the integrity of the academic record and fostering trust in scholarly communication.

The Review Process

Cad_Lin's review process is open and transparent. In this process, manuscripts are made immediately available as a pre-print in advance of any formal peer review procedures, so the wider community is able to contribute to the review process. In the formal peer review process, authors and reviewers are aware of each other’s identity. Direct, reciprocal discussion between author(s) and reviewers and/or between reviewers is allowed and encouraged. If the manuscript is accepted, all signed reviewes are published as part of the paper, along with the author's responses. When the manuscript is published, review and commenting are allowed and encouraged, either directly in the published text, using the integrated Hypothesis tool, or in independent platforms such as PubPeer. We believe that this approach corroborates the scrutiny and curation of a peer-reviewed publication and helps to re-establish bonds of trust with the community. Besides, it allows reviewers to be recognized and rewarded for the important work they do. By publishing their review reports and assigning them a DOI makes them citable research outputs in their own right. Please read Cad_Lin's Review Process for more information.

Editorial Process Time

The time between the submission of a manuscript and the first response from a reviewer 3 weeks. The time between the submission and the publication of manuscripts varies widely and is related to several factors, including the number of rounds required for an editorial decision to be made. On average, articles are published in eight weeks.

Open Access Policy

Cad_Lin is a Platinum Open Access journal financed by the Brazilian Linguistics Association. It does not charge authors for publication and offers immediate free access to its content, according to the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the general public promotes the worldwide democratization of knowledge. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.

Retraction Policy

Cad_Lin is dedicated to upholding the integrity of the academic record and adheres to the standards recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Our editorial processes, selection criteria, and publication practices align with ethical guidelines for addressing suspected scientific misconduct, including plagiarism, data falsification, citation manipulation, duplicate publication, and authorship disputes. We use plagiarism detection tools, such as iThenticate, and apply standardized procedures to investigate and resolve cases of misconduct. If misconduct is identified prior to publication, the manuscript is withdrawn from review, and the authors may be barred from submitting future work to the journal. In cases of misconduct by editors or reviewers, they are removed from their roles.

For misconduct discovered after publication, Cad_Lin will take necessary actions to amend the academic record, which may include issuing corrections, retractions, expressions of concern, or other notices, all freely accessible to maintain transparency. Retraction decisions are made by the Editor-in-Chief based on credible evidence of significant errors or misconduct and are independent of any institutional findings. Retraction notices will state the reasons, specify who is retracting the article, and link to the original publication. Authors will be notified of the retraction decision and have an opportunity to respond; if the retraction is initiated by the authors, this will be noted, along with any statements of agreement or disagreement.

Authors may republish reliable sections of a retracted article if appropriate, provided they notify the editors of the prior retraction, cite the retraction notice, and obtain any necessary permissions. Cad_Lin will consider concerns about the integrity of articles, regardless of the time since publication, and will address each case individually. Authors withdrawing an article from a predatory journal to submit to Cad_Lin must ensure that no version of the article is published elsewhere; if a published version exists, it cannot be republished without retraction or withdrawal of the earlier version.

When a retraction is required, it will be issued promptly upon decision. If an institutional investigation is ongoing, Cad_Lin may publish an expression of concern as an interim measure. Corrections will be issued for minor errors that do not affect the findings, while expressions of concern may be used when an article’s integrity is in question.

For cases not explicitly covered in this policy, Cad_Lin will adhere to COPE’s guidelines, ensuring that all actions are governed by principles of integrity, transparency, and fairness.
