|I live in East Calais with my wife, Christy, a children’s book author. We have three children and a growing number of grandchildren. I love rural Vermont because of its wonderful people and its unique landscape. Since stepping down as dean of Vermont Law and Graduate School I’ve dedicated my life to local issues. I’m vice chair of the Calais Select Board, and deeply involved in important local projects such as the revival of the East Calais Store and the Curtis Pond Dam. I’ve seen how, working together with local volunteers and state and federal agencies, we can make great things happen. I’ve spent the last months knocking on doors, listening to the residents of Plainfield, Marshfield and Calais talk about the serious problems we all face. Housing is out of reach for normal people. The cost of gas and oil – and other goods -- is skyrocketing. It’s becoming more and more difficult to afford to live here. These are problems that require attention and resources from the state government. For that, we need to have effective and thoughtful representation in Montpelier so the financial decisions and laws made there serve our purposes, the needs of our three towns.
- Rural Vermont needs help to address housing costs, childcare, cost of living
- We must reduce our dependence on oil and natural gas to heat our homes by weatherizing, advanced wood heat and heat pumps.
- Strong local schools are essential to preserving Vermont communities.
Climate change will affect us all. Vermont has to ensure we have renewable electricity, heat our homes with renewable resources, and electrify our fleet. The state legislature must adopt policies that support this transformation. Vermont can be a national leader in addressing climate change

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
