Shehan qualifies for 200m semis

Sri Lanka's Shehan Ambepitiya had one of his best days here at New
Delhi, going beyond the barrier of his personal bests twice. Shehan who
had his personal best time as 21.19 seconds before the Delhi Games,
bettered it quite easily in the first round of the men's 200m at the
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium clocking 21.17 seconds. Doing his best on a
good track that has already produced several games records, Shehan
bettered the 21.17 second performance with a new personal best of 21.12
seconds and was placed third in the quarter finals to qualify for
today's semi-finals.
N.C.D. Priyadarshani qualified for the finals of the women's long
jump with a clearance of 6.11 meters and will be in contest with 11
others in the finals to be held today evening.
Manjula Kumara too could not achieve what he expected and had to be
satisfied with the ninth position. He cleared 2.15 meters but failed in
all three of his attempts to clear 2.20 metres.
The Sri Lankan paddlers had mixed fortunes at the Yamuna Sports
Complex. Dinesh Deshapriya had an easy 4-0 win over South Africa's
Itumeleng Molahole (11/09, 11/09, 11/08, 11/07) in a mens preliminary
round match. Rohan Sirisena too had it easy over the St. Vincent and the
Grenadint 4-1. Nirmala Buwaneka Jayasinghe too found it easy over
Vanuatu's Lulu Ham when she defeated her 4-0. Although the other two
Lankan women, Nuwani Navodya (0-4) and Ishara Madurangi (1-4) lost to
English and Malaysian respectively.
Lankan shuttlers having a good time
At the Siri Fort Sports Complex, the Lankan shuttlers had a good
time. In the round of 64, Chandrika de Silva beat Jamaica's Christine
Dennis 21-5, 21-7, Subodha Dahanayake beat Kenyan Anita Bhusuru (walk
over after the first round) and Lasitha Menaka beat Kenyan Victor Munga
21-11, 21-11. Dinuka Karunarathne was also successful to beat Mauritius'
Michael Stephan 21-15, 21-11.

Sri Lanka's national champion Manju Wanniarachchi produced a splendid
performance to clear his third round hurdle in the Commonwealth Games
boxing championships at the Javaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, India
yesterday.
The seasoned campaigner lived upto the expectations and had the
better of his opponent from Seaschels Andrique Allisop on points to
enter the quarter finals of this event.
