In a year when we mark the centenary of the founding of FIDE, we would like to honor all of those who made and are making an exceptional contribution to the world of chess. 

This year, we celebrate not only the rich history of FIDE but also the people who have enhanced the sport through their dedication and passion either as players, arbiters, organizers, photographers, journalists, project leaders, authors or educators. 

Join us in recognizing and celebrating the remarkable achievements of those who help make the chess world thrive every day!

About FIDE 100 Awards

As part of FIDE’s centenary celebrations, we are proud to introduce the FIDE 100 Awards. These awards recognize the outstanding individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the development and promotion of chess globally. 

The FIDE 100 Awards aim to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements and efforts of individuals, groups and organizations in the chess community. By recognizing these contributions, FIDE wants to continue to inspire excellence and promote the cultural and intellectual values of chess worldwide. 

The awards are given in 19 categories. Each category has a specified nomination and voting criteria.

BEST MALE ARBITER

Awarded to the male arbiter who has proved themselves at the highest levels throughout their career, officiating top-class events. An arbiter whose knowledge and personality inspired others and who ensured that their professional and positive attitude increased the quality of tournaments they officiated. 

Qualification criteria: International arbiter who acted as Chief Arbiter in at least three World Events (ie. Events published in the FIDE Calendar under the section “World Events”)

Nomination procedure: The Arbiters Commission will nominate seven male arbiters who qualify for this award. 

Selection: Jury with the consultation of Continental Arbiters Commission, Global Strategy and Events Commissions .

HC COMMISSION

BEST FEMALE ARBITER

Awarded to the female arbiter who has proved themselves at the highest levels throughout their career, officiating top-class events, whose knowledge and personality inspired others and who ensured that their professional and positive attitude increased the quality of tournaments they officiated. 

Qualification criteria: International arbiter who acted as Chief Arbiter in at least three World Events

Nomination procedure: The Arbiters Commission will nominate six top female arbiters who qualify for this award. 

Selection: Jury with the consultation of Continental  Arbiters Commission, Global Strategy and Events Commissions

FIDE TRAINERS' 100 YEARS AWARD (male)​

Awarded to a male trainer who has devoted his life to teaching chess and elevating the standard of the game, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the chess community over an extended period of time. The award recognizes individuals who have shown expertise, dedication, and innovation in chess training assessed based on their accomplishments, influence on player development, and contributions to chess literature and training methodologies. 

Qualification Criteria: 

  • Holder of FST Title: To ensure a high level of expertise and recognition within the chess  community. 
  • Long-term Contribution as a Trainer: Demonstrated commitment and impact over a long period, indicating sustained dedication to the development of players. 
  • Contribution to Chess Literature: Notable contributions to chess literature that have advanced the understanding and development of chess. 
  • Results: Evidence of successful training outcomes, such as notable achievements by students or teams under their guidance. 
  • Holder of FT Title can be nominated (for coaches aged 60 years and above). 

 

Nomination procedure: The Trainers’ Commission will provide a list of male trainers who will be nominated. 

Selection: Jury

The Award recognizes the most outstanding FIDE chess tournament for its organization, impact, and success. It honors events that have set new standards for chess tournaments, engaging players and audiences, and contributing to the promotion and development of the sport.  

Qualification criteria: Any official FIDE tournament in the past 100 years. 

Nomination procedure: Nominations can be made by Continentals / National Chess Federations   

Selection: Jury with the consultation of the General Strategy Commission and Events Commissions.

HC COMMISSION

THE MOST MEMORABLE PRIVATE CHESS TOURNAMENT

This award recognizes the most impactful privately organized chess tournament which has earned its place in chess history thanks to its strength, reputation in the chess world, and recognition by players and the chess audience. It recognizes the exceptional efforts of organizers who have created unforgettable experiences, inspiring the global chess community. 

Qualification criteria: Any privately organized tournament in the past 100 years. 

Nomination procedure: Nominations can be made by  Continentals / National Chess Federations   

Selection: Jury with the consultation of the General Strategy Commission and Events Commissions.

Nominations are accepted until August 20, 2024.

FIDE BOOK - 100 YEARS

This award is dedicated to chess books originally published from 1924 onwards, whose contents remain pertinent and valuable to contemporary chess players and coaches despite the passage of time. Recognized for their historical significance and enduring relevance, these books are honored for their outstanding contributions to chess literature, which have had a profound impact on players, coaches, and the entire chess community. This award celebrates the enduring influence, legacy, and invaluable contributions these books have made to the development and evolution of chess. 

 

Qualification criteria:  

  • Historical Significance:   The book must have been originally published from 1924 onwards, during a period of notable developments and milestones in chess history. 
  • Enduring Relevance: The content of the book should remain pertinent and valuable to contemporary chess players, coaches, and enthusiasts despite the passage of time. 
  • Impact on Chess Literature: The book should have made a significant contribution to the field of chess literature, whether through groundbreaking analysis, innovative concepts, or influential writing style. 
  • Continued Influence: Evidence of the book’s ongoing influence on the development and understanding of chess theory and culture up to the present day should be demonstrated. 
  • Critical Reception: Positive reviews, citations by other authors, and acknowledgment of the book’s importance within the chess community should support its selection for the award. 
  • Legacy and Perpetuation: The book’s enduring legacy, as evidenced by reprints, translations into multiple languages, and its incorporation into educational curricula or training programs, should be considered. 
  • Contribution to Chess Development: The book should have contributed to the advancement of chess knowledge, understanding, or practice, either through direct instructional material or through its influence on subsequent generations of players and authors. 

 

Nomination process: The FIDE Trainers’ Commission will provide a list of up to 10 books which in their opinion qualify for this role. 

Selection: Jury 

Nominations are accepted until August 15, 2024.

INCLUSIVITY

The FIDE Inclusivity Award celebrates initiatives and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the global chess community. This award recognizes efforts to create a more welcoming and accessible environment for players of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities, fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging in chess. 

Qualification Criteria: Initiatives, organizations, projects or federations that have consistently supported the community of players with disabilities to drive their inclusion, raise the profile and awareness of players with disabilities and show that chess is truly an inclusive sport. 

Nomination process: Continental and National Chess Federations.

Selection: Jury with the consultation of the  Players with Disabilities Commission.

PRESIDENTIAL AWARD

This is a special award that will go to an individual who has continuously served chess as a player, arbiter, organizer, journalist, promoter, educator, or official. The award is meant to recognize long-standing commitment to chess and its future at both the national and international levels. It is intended as a special recognition for those who have made substantial efforts to advance chess and who have played a pivotal role in shaping the chess scene and its future.
