Plagued dragons refer to dragons that have been infused with the Plague of Undeath by the Cult of the Damned. The experiment began within Scholomance as another method of spreading the plague. The necromancers of Scholomance, working under Vectus, used black dragon eggs from the Burning Steppes as the basis for their experiments,[1] and hoped to unleash the plagued dragons on the world as a dragonflight.[2] However, the Argent Dawn caught wind of their activities and worked to destroy the abominable plagued dragons before they could be deployed.

At the time of the war against the Lich King, after they joined the ranks of the Scourge, the Hyldnir frost vrykul of Valkyrion served the Lich King by capturing proto-drakes and their eggs, in order to infect them with the plague through the Blighted Pool, waters filled with corruption and disease in the Storm Peaks. The infected creatures became their mounts and nest all around in the mountains above their village.[3] These plagued proto-drakes were also used as mounts by the vrykul of Valkyrion in Icecrown, and were later targeted by Gretta the Arbiter who ordered adventurers to destroy the plagued eggs.[4]

The Archlich Kel'Thuzad once nursed a plague-infected whelp to adulthood, feeding it only the finest liquefied remains.[5]

Notes[]

  • Notably, both incarnations of plagued dragons are not listed as undead, meaning that they were meant to represent a sort of living draconic host; rather than the more commonplace undead dragons.
