Biography

European Aristocracy
Robert Cecil was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury was born on 1 June 1563. He was the son of William Cecil, 1st Baron of Burghley and Mildred Cooke. He married Hon. Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of Sir William Brooke, 10th Lord Cobham (of Kent) and Frances Newton, on 31 August 1589. He died on 24 May 1612 at age 48.

1586 to 1589

He was admitted to Gray's Inn. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Westminster from 1586 to 1587. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hertfordshire from 1588 to 1589. He held the office of High Sheriff of Hertfordshire in 1589.

1591 to 1599

He held the office of High Steward of Cambridge University in 1591. He was invested as a Knight in 1591. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 2 August 1591. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hertfordshire from 1592 to 1593. He held the office of Principal Secretary of State between 1596 and 1612. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hertfordshire from 1597 to 1598. He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1597 to 1599. He held the office of Bailiff of the City of London and the Liberties of Westminster circa 1598. He was Envoy to France between February 1598 and April 1598, to prevent a Franco-Spanish alliance. He was Envoy to the States General in July 1598. He held the office of Recorder of Colchester in 1599. He held the office of Master of the Court of Wards between 1599 and 1612, for life.

1601 to 1604

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Hertfordshire in 1601. He held the office of Chancellor of Dublin University between 1601 and 1612. He held the office of Chancellor of Cambridge University between 1601 and 1612. He held the office of High Steward of St. Martin-le-Grand circa 1603. He held the office of High Steward of Kingston-upon-Hull in 1603. He held the office of Keeper of the Privy Seal and Signet in 1603. He held the office of Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1603. He was created 1st Baron Cecil of Essendon, co. Rutland [England] on 13 May 1603. He was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. He was created 1st Viscount Cranborne, co. Dorset [England] on 20 August 1604.

1604 to 1612

He graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1605 with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire between 1605 and 1612. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in January 1604/5. He was created 1st Earl of Salisbury [England] on 4 May 1605. He wrote the book An Answer to Certain Scandalous Papers scattered abroad under Colour of a Catholick Adminition, published 1606. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1606. He held the office of Lord High Treasurer between 1608 and 1612. He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset from 1611 to 1612, jointly. He held the office of High Steward of Winchester College in 1612. He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.

His name appears on The Second Charter of Virginia; May 23, 1609.

Robert Cecil died of cancer on 24 May 1612 at Marlborough, Wiltshire. He is buried in Hatfield Parish Church.

His book The State and Dignitie of a Secretaire of Estate's Place was published in 1642.
