Veteran Labour MP Paul Flynn has been appointed as the new shadow Welsh secretary.
The Cardiff-born Newport West MP, 81, stood in as shadow leader of the House of Commons last week and now adds the Wales portfolio, where he will shadow Conservative secretary of state Alun Cairns.
It follows a turbulent week for Labour in which leader Jeremy Corbyn faced mass resignations from his shadow cabinet in protest at a perceived lukewarm campaign for a remain vote in the EU referendum.
Mr Flynn’s predecessor Nia Griffith, MP for Llanelli, was among those who stepped down.
At 81, Mr Flynn – the MP for Newport West since 1987 – became the oldest politician to be a member of the shadow cabinet for more than 100 years.
Mr Flynn said his time in the role might not be particularly long, and added: "It wasn't a huge shortlist I was chosen from."
Basking in the Welsh football team’s success on Twitter, and with his tongue firmly in his cheek, Mr Flynn earlier wrote: “Happy to stand in as Shadow House Leader/Welsh Secretary et al but tweet request asking me to sub for Aaron Ramsey is a tad impractical.”
