Dr. Francesco Santoro, Italy: Thank you Dr. Trela. First of all, our thanks to His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa for the patronage of this Conference and thank you all for the organization of these meetings, really they are nice and professional.

My name is Francesco Santoro, I am the President of the Italian Registry of Arabian Horses, ANICA, and I am here with Mr. Domenico Ciceroni, General Secretary of ANICA. Our Association was founded in 1979 and our first stud book was printed in 1982. In Italy today there are 22,500 pure Arabian horses already registered and we are printing in these days our stud books volumes 13, 14, 15 and 16. The previous stud books are printed in books and on CD and available on our website for everyone.

ANICA allows artificial insemination, we accept post-mortem use of frozen semen. Embryo transfer is limited to 4 foals per year per mare, and we parentage test all horses with DNA and all horses are identified with a microchip. During 2016 we have registered 946 foals born in Italy, 183 horses were exported and 57 horses were imported.

Our offices are in Collecchio close to Parma in the north of Italy. We have 4 people working full time and the use of computerised systems.  We have issued passports for many years, and we update each day the official website in the Italian data bank. ANICA follows every sector regarding the Arabian horse industry and every year we make important efforts to support Italian breeders and owners in shows, races, endurance and riding competitions. Last year, in the 2016 season, the total prize money distributed by ANICA was more than 70,000 Euros for the best horses born and bred in Italy for show, endurance, racing and ridden competition. And the same prize money will also be awarded in 2017.

In 2016 we have had an important International Conference in Rome with racing as well. In  the 2017 season is Italy we should have about 40 races, more than 80 endurance races and about 10 shows plus 1 National Championship and the European ECAHO Championship in Italy. Thank you for your attention.

REPORT AT 2011 WAHO CONFERENCE:

Dr. Monika Savier, Italy: I thank most sincerely the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club and the WAHO for this hospitality and organization. I am Monika Savier, delegated by the President of ANICA, Vincenzo Pellegrini, who sends us his warm greetings to the audience. The National Agency of Arabian Horses in Italy, so called ANICA, was founded 32 years ago and entered into the WAHO in 1982. Actually we have 16,700 horses registered in the ANICA studbooks, and we finished in these days the 12th volume of the studbook in DVD version which will be provided to all of you in the next days, by post.

The purebred Arabian horse in Italy is present in all regions, including the islands Sicily and Sardinia which have a more than 1,000 years old tradition of breeding of the Arabian horse. Arabian horses in Italy are mainly bred for shows, endurance and racing. We had this year 15 ECAHO shows and in 2012 we will have 18 shows. Ridden classes in English and Western style are very popular, as is racing and also endurance races on every level. ANICA is sponsoring different national and international sports events with prize money in order to support the activities of breeding. In 2010 ANICA registered 950 new foals. 64 horses were imported, and 55 were exported. There is still no mandatory testing of SCID and CA. We accept embryo transfer and artificial insemination and the post-mortem use of semen. This was the Italian report. I thank you for your attention.

REPORT MADE AT 2009 WAHO CONFERENCE:

I am Titti Gagliani from Italy, and I am today replacing Dr. Francesco Santoro who was unable to attend this Conference. At my side is Pier Luigi Rota, who is ANICA’s Secretary and a Board Member. For those of you who are not familiar with our Association, here are some key points.

ANICA, which in English means the Italian National Association for the Arabian Horse was founded in 1979, and became a WAHO Member in 1982. We have about 900 members of our association. As many of you will remember, ANICA fought a battle for over ten years to become the official holder of the Stud Book for Purebred Arabian horses in Italy. This decree from the Ministry of Agriculture was finally issued on November 19th, 2007.

ANICA has so far published 8 stud books, up to 2004. During this year, we shall print the Volumes 9 and 10 which will include over 3,000 additional horses. Today, a total of over 15,000 horses are registered in our stud books. Since the year 2,000 we have registered between 600 and 700 foals yearly. Every foal undergoes the DNA analysis, parent verification and is microchipped, microchipping has been compulsory since 2007 in Italy.

As to shows, we can report that in 2009 we shall organize 11 Shows, including 3 International ECAHO B Shows and the European Championships in Verona. In addition, we organize and carry through several other events, in collaboration with Exhibition events to further promote the Arabian horse in our country.

Flat racing has a long tradition in Italy, this takes place on four racetracks from North to South, the race fans can follow over 100 exciting races. Also, endurance riding is getting more and popular, we have over 1,000 purebred Arabian horses which are involved in this sport. Italian horses and their riders are playing an ever increasing role also internationally.

REPORT MADE AT 2007 WAHO CONFERENCE:

ANICA published our latest stud book, volume 8 in 2005. Up to now we have registered a total of about 30,000 purebred Arabian horses in Italy. In 2006 the number of Arabian foals registered was 623. The number of broodmares used for breeding was 650, and the number of stallions used for breeding was 220. In 2006 we exported 51 horses and imported 40. We allow Artificial Insemination and Embryo transfer, the latter is limited to 2 foals per mare per year by the same stallion.

Since 1987 all horses registered in ANICA have been parent verified by blood typing, and since 2002 we have used DNA typing. Our horse database has been computerized since 1998. Each year ANICA supports purebred Arabian horses involved in sport, especially in endurance. This year ANICA donated, for the first time, an ANICA Trophy for an endurance ride over the distance of 115 kilometres, this endurance competition is registered with the FEI with prize money awarded to horses registered in ANICA. We also organize 8 shows per year, and the European Championships on alternate years in Verona, which is very successful.

In 2007 ANICA registered 633 foals, and recorded 76 exports and 54 imports.
