Nine launches a new multicasting channel EXTRA on Channel 94 from today.
It will feature advertiser-related content including home shopping, brand funded, religious, community, educational and multi-cultural programming.
“Direct Response advertising is proving to be of more and more interest to our clients and by launching this new channel, EXTRA, we can provide advertisers with opportunities to specifically target their audience,’ said Jeffrey Browne, Managing Director, Nine Network.
EXTRA will be on Channel 94 in eastern seaboard metropolitan markets and 84 in NBN regional areas.
Like Seven’s TV4ME, the channel will not be surveyed as part of OzTAM ratings.
In a somewhat confusing brand naming, last year Nine also launched a “live game” companion for the iPad, known as Nine Extra.

Where is Rik Burnett when you need him
I suspect the picture quality isn’t up to much but would surely be better to use the bandwidth for an interactive stream offering extra coverage of events as and when required – and then allowing the crap that currently airs on them 24/7 to air when the channel isn’t needed.
“Home shopping, brand funded, religious, community, educational and multi-cultural programming”… Wow, absolutely Nothing of interest. Seems perfect for Nine. A complete waste of bandwidth.
Has anyone seen “Chat 121” that’s on now (11:30pm). It’s just like a internet chat page, only no one is on it. I’ve switched back a few times in the past 15 minutes and it’s still the same static image. It’s still better than QuizMania though!
I agree with the complete waste of bandwidth factor as it isn’t something descent like when Sky News is streaming over the internet when its a big News story
Of course the other channels will be compressed to make way for this rubbish !!!
After two weeks of poor ratings, expect the adverts to be replaced by repeat episodes of Big Bang Theory and Harry Potter movies.
Why not use the bandwidth to give us viewers in the Southern Highlands for instance access to TVS. The same for all the other states with channel 44. When will we get proper competition from the likes of Foxtel launching a free to air channel like the UK. Informercial TV. Got to love Freeview.
@ Robert2012:
Um. Who said you were supposed to be excited about it?
Wow a channel full of adds. zzzzzzzzzzzz
It’s all “info-mercials”. Why so am I supposed to get excited about it?
I looked up NBN regional areas and see it’s from Newcastle and broadcasts to Northern NSW and parts of Queensland. So what’s regional Victoria? I know there used to be two channels. But it’s been awhile since I saw them. Maybe they were WIN and Southern Cross.
“Like Seven’s TV4ME, the channel will not be surveyed as part of OzTAM ratings.” – how come? Do the channels ask to be excluded?
TV4ME and EXTRA just show infomercials 24/7.
Who the heck wants to watch this – when we get enough ads on the main channels???
No wonder OZTAM are excluding them from their ratings.
Sheesh that’s what we need another shopping channel. I guess it will be only a matter of time before Ten decides to do the same. Thank goodness for the ABC who do use their multi-channels for something worthwhile.
So we dont get this in Adelaide? I guess it doesnt matter, I dont even watch Nine, so I doubt I’d be watching this.
And so this provides yet another reduction to the quality of the HD channel.
When HD was first proposed by the FTA channels in 1998, it was supposed to be the main channel and occupy the entire digital spectrum for that network.
Now, thanks to triplecasting (SD mandated for analogue simulcasts), multichannels and now datacasting licences, the HD channel has had to share with one, two and now three SD channels.
A lack of this channel may be one reason I’m thankful that WIN owns the Nine affiliate in my city of Adelaide! (Please don’t add Extra, WIN…)
No love in WIN areas? Surely they could stick a giant “WIN Extra” purple mark in the corner of the screen, just to remind us that it is WIN we are watching.
What a complete waste of bandwidth, I wonder if the other channels are being compressed to make room for this garbage??
