In 1660, 12 scholars, including Christopher Wren, decided to set up a “College for the Promoting of Physico-Mathematicall Experimentall Learning”, now known as The Royal Society; in 1859 Washington Irving, author of Rip Van Winkle (1819) and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820), died, aged 76. He was a literary success in the US and England, where he spent several years; in 1911 “Lord” George Sanger, a showman and circus owner, was murdered aged 85 with a hatchet by an employee. Having started off working with his father’s peep show and selling lettered rock, in 1885 and 1898 royal performances were given to Queen Victoria at Sandringham and Balmoral. He was the first president of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain; in 1916 six 22lb bombs were dropped from a two-person LVG C.IV German biplane between Hyde Park and Victoria station — the first aeroplane attack and the first daylight raid on London. Zeppelin airships had been used for raids since May 31, 1915.
Nature notes
The woods are full of mysterious sounds. At this time of year, an intriguing tap-tapping can often be heard. It is too early for the great spotted woodpeckers so the creator of this sound may well be a great tit. In a process known as “hold-hammering”, great tits place an acorn or beech mast on a branch, and holding it steady with their feet, hammer it open with their beak. In this way, the birds can even access the kernel of the obdurate hazelnut within 20 minutes or so. In winter shortages, great tits have also been known to prey on pipistrelle bats. Jonathan Tulloch
