My thanks to Doru Ionescu, Thomas Henrich, Holger Lieske, Zsuzsa Veroci, Harald Fietz, Mikhail Golubev, Laszlo Nagy, Albert Muratet, Toni Ayza, Steve Ross, Marek Kolk, Spiros Ilandzis, Roberto Alvarez, Mig Greengard, Soretti Vincenzo, Gérard Demuydt and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Plenty of good chess this week. The main interest this week was the Lichthof Chess Champions days which saw Garry Kasparov return in an exhibition event against Anatoly Karpov, Judit Polgar and Viktor Korchnoi. Kasparov seemed in reasonably good form especially in playing conditions which really accentuated the fact it was an exhibition. He tied for first with Anatoly Karpov who must also be pleased as at the end of the month he plays an eight game rapid match against Peter Leko. The NH Hotels Scheveningen event sees its final round tomorrow. The main interest is not whether the rising stars or experience teams will win (the rising stars more or less have it wrapped up) but whether Magnus Carlsen will take first place over Sergey Karjakin and claim a place in the next Amber tournament. Carlsen was a point and a half clear but a loss to Beliavsky combined with a Karjakin win against Jussupow means a tense final round for the team mates.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Lichthof Chess Champions Day celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Credit Suisse. The event saw Garry Kasparov playing his first chess event since his retirement after the Linares 2005 tournament in Zurich on August 22nd 2006. The event was very much an exhibition with fairly relaxed and noisy conditions whilst the players played blitz (5'+2") in the double round robin tournament. Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov shared first on 4.5/6.

The NH Chess Tournament takes place August 19th-29th at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. Youth almost secured victory with a round to go by going 25-20 up. However the race for the invitation to next year's Amber tournament available to the best scoring rising star is open again after Carlsen lost and Karjakin won. Carlsen leads by half a point with a round to go. This confirms a trend seen in Carlsen's career where he has failed towards the end of events when achievement is close (in the recent Norwegian Championships and last year's Wijk aan Zee tournament are just examples that spring to mind).
Another novelty is that apart from the usual live transmission of the games there will be streaming video coverage from the tournament hall so that the Internet audience can follow the entire action.

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the Germans Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
