Trump's Proposed Tariffs Could Cut the Auto Industry Deeper Than We First Thought

Many people think American car companies make all of the components that go into manufacturing a domestic car, but that’s very far from the truth. • Dartman Most Undocumented (“illegal”) workers in the US receive the same half-assed “protections” that documented workers do.
  • FreedMike Some context: if the preproduction stats are to be believed, the Scat Pack puts up numbers very similar to a Hellcat's, and the Hellcat was 80-90 grand, easy. So...$550 a month (call it $750 if you don't want to do a downstroke, which doesn't make a ton of money on a lease), ain't bad at all. Many states offer EV tax credits, so the downstroke might even be covered. My main issue would be the 10K per year mileage restriction. But I'd say this is a pretty decent deal.
  • Bob I can do a 1-hr commute (each way, 50-total miles RT) in DC on DC, and still travel to the beach and the mountains on gas? Sign me up. I don't even care if the Kia looks like a Hyundai! I can dump the winter beater 4th car and buy that classic DeLorean I've always wanted...
  • CarsonFK I hosted Thanksgiving this year, so I did most of the turkey-related work and served as sous-chef for my visiting Dad, who made his decadent chicken liver stuffing. My peer group chat was dominated by discussions of dry brining, spatchcocking, smoking, deep frying, and otherwise preparing turkeys in ways that aren't printed on the packaging, but I just baked my 18 pounder in an oven bag. My family and guests seemed happy enough. Once my guests left, I was informed that I'll be hosting Christmas this year too.
  • FreedMike Good news, but PHEVs still have drawbacks. 1) They're far slower while in EV-only mode, and 2) if you don't have at-home charging, then the public network is still a work that's definitely in progress. I have a feeling that most PHEV owners buy them for the tax credit and run them like regular hybrids. If that was my thing, I'd just buy a hybrid.
