NOTE: As of November 2024, the Mibbit-based web-browser that I’d previously set up for people to connect to our IRC server is no longer functional. Mibbit has shut down its service. Our server still exists — you can just no longer connect that way.
Unfortunately, Kiwi IRC, possibly the easiest web-based alternative is extremely variable. If you feel like rolling the dice, I suggest this connection but there are no guarantees you’ll get through.
Web-based clients now seem very few and far between. If you do want to connect this way, there are probably two options.
IRCCLOUD
The first is called IRCCloud. I have tested IRCCloud and it does connect through to to TORn. But it requires more effort than simply pressing a button: you need to setup an account (which is free — igonore all the premium/paid stuff), and you’ll need to enter the TORn server’s own connection details each time you login.
Once you login you will be greted by a screen like below. Enter details as I’ve laid out with your own chosen nickname/handle. Then connect.
IRCCloud also offers a mobile app that, last time I looked, is pretty decent.
ELEMENT/MATRIX
The other option is a chat network/protocol developed by one of our former staffers and IRC admins, Arathorn. It can require a little more technical knowledge. However he tells me if you use this link here, you should be able to connect directly to our server.
Again, it will require signing up for an account. Matrix/Element is a completely free service.
About us: Barliman’s is a place for good conversation about J.R.R. Tolkien’s works and the Lord of the Rings movies. Our chatrooms are very newbie-friendly, always open and we’d love you to join us! All we ask is that you’re polite, and refrain from swearing, or being crude.
