HE may have been the butt of a few jokes during his time as Labour leader but Jeremy Corbyn is now getting the comedians on his side for a major rally.

Norman Lovett, Robin Ince and Francesca Martinez will join singer-songwriter Billy Bragg at the Keep Corbyn rally in Brighton on September 13.

Home-grown talent Attila the Stockbroker and Jo Neary will also perform while the Labour leader and Unite general secretary Len McCluskey are among the guest speakers.

The event is part of a national tour and will be held less than a fortnight before Mr Corbyn learns whether he has been re-elected as party leader.

The Brighton Dome is expected to be a sell-out - much like Mr Corbyn’s campaign rally at the Hilton Brighton Metropole last month which saw the Labour leader deliver a second speech to hundreds of supporters in Regency Gardens.

Southwick-based comedian John Baine, aka performance poet Attila the Stockbroker, has already performed around the country on the tour which he said he hoped would also be brought to Shoreham later in the year.

He has already warned organisers his will be a breezy performance at the Dome, he will perform ten minutes at the show’s start at 7pm before dashing off to see his beloved Albion play at the Amex against Huddersfield.

He said: “I re-joined the Labour Party the day Jeremy was elected.

“I actually feel pride to be a member of the party again compared to the time when I left after the Iraq War, after Blair and Bush, when I just felt ashamed.

“I never joined another party, I was asked to stand for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition in Hove at the last election but I said no thanks because I always wanted to support Labour.

“We’ve had 2,000 people in Bournemouth, 800 people on a Monday night in Swansea, all standing up for Jeremy Corbyn.

“I don’t think Jeremy is going to miss out on goal difference like Albion in the leadership contest, I think he will win by the equivalent of 6-0.

“After that, I hope will all come together to fight the real enemy, the Tories.”

John said he welcomed all the young comedians on the comedy circuit currently getting involved in politics but bemoaned the reluctance of bands to take up the cause and match the impact of the Red Wedge members of the 1980s including Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Paul Weller.

He said: “There are a lot of poets and comedians but where are all the young bands sticking their hands up?

“With the exception of King Blues we don’t have any young rock n roll bands, I’m desperate to hear it.”
