International Details - Post Summer Hangover

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Summer is mostly over and we're moving back to the normal schedule for the international box office columns. Mostly. There are still not enough multi-million dollar films to fill out the top 30, but as the blockbusters make way for smaller releases, that will change. Meanwhile, The Hangover remained in sixth place with $7.65 million on 2782 screens in 46 markets for a total of $152.38 million internationally and $420.65 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in Brazil with $1.13 million on 205 screens, while it remained in first place in Mexico with $1.04 million on 398 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.56 million after two. Other million dollar markets include Spain where it was down just 18% to $1.27 million on 319 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.88 million after two, and Germany where it added $1.02 million on 427 screens giving the film a total of $15.29 million after a month of release.

  • Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs fell to seventh place with $7.24 million on 5570 screens in 66 markets for a total of $616.42 million internationally and $808.81 million worldwide. It was only the third animated film to reach that milestone worldwide behind Finding Nemo and Shrek 2. It might catch the former, but the latter's record is safe, for now.
  • Public Enemies fell out of the top five earning $5.06 million on 2605 screens in 52 markets for a total of $85.92 million. The film is coasting on holdovers at the moment, but by the time it opens in Italy in November it will have reached $100 million internationally while it will top $200 million worldwide before it opens in Japan in December.
  • Take Off climbed into the top ten internationally with $4.66 million on 546 screens in South Korea. This was enough for first place in the market, while its total has reached $30.60 million after four weeks of release.
  • The Proposal remained in tenth place with $4.56 million on 2151 screens in 47 markets for a total of $110.82 million internationally. The film had no major openings this past weekend, but it did add $1.24 million on 610 screens in Germany giving the film $14.04 million after a month of release there.
  • District 9 saw its weekend haul sliced in half to $3.74 million on 850 screens in 12 markets for a still early total of $14.34 million. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did earn first place in Denmark with $295,000 on 40 screens during its opening weekend for a total of $324,000 there. Meanwhile, the film was down 67% in Russia to $1.55 million on 453 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.02 million after two. However, a 67% drop-off in Russia is not an extreme event. In fact, it is better than average for the weekend.
  • Kung Fu Cyborg debuted in 12th place with $3.31 million on 359 screens in two markets. In China it made $3.16 million on 326 screens while in Hong Kong it made $145,000 on 33.
  • Horst Schlammer - Isch Kandidiere! opened in second place in Germany and 13th place overall with $3.21 million on 657 screens in 2 markets. Of that, $3.20 million was earned on 653 screens in Germany, while the rest was earned in Austria.
  • Haeundae remained in second place in South Korea while dipping to 14th internationally with $3.01 million on 437 screens over the weekend and $57.14 million after a month of release. In comparison, Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, which was a massive hit in the market, earned just under $42 million in total.
  • Neuilly Sa Mère! held strong down a mere 2% to $2.89 million on 417 screens in 2 markets over the weekend for a total of $6.89 million after two. Of that, $2.74 million on was earned on 400 screens in France lifting its total in that market to $6.52 million.
  • Sophie's Revenge also held well down 22% in China adding $2.84 million on 476 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.68 million after two.
  • The Ugly Truth slipped a spot to 17th with $2.37 million on 728 screens in 7 markets for a total of $17.34 million. The film opens in France this weekend and should climb the chart as a result.
  • The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 remained in 18th place with $2.31 million on 1350 screens in 28 markets but has made just $36.45 million so far.
  • Aliens in the Attic added $2.31 million on 1290 screens in 10 markets over the weekend to its total of $10.12 million. Its biggest market remained the U.K. where it added $1.06 million on 457 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.77 million after two.
  • Kaminey nearly fell off the chart with $2.28 million on 976 screens in 17 markets for a total of $8.49 million. It should have little trouble reaching $10 million internationally, which is strong for a Indian film, especially in light of Bollywood's extended slump.
  • Night At The Museum 2 was within a rounding error of $2 million adding $1.98 million on 681 screens in 5 markets for a total of $228.76 million internationally and $404.85 million worldwide.
One last note, 9 made its international debut opening in fourth place in France with $1.40 million on 443 screens. That does not make me particularly bullish about its chances here.
