Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has continued to call upon its armed forces for various conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm, peacekeeping in the former Yugoslavia, and the War on Terror following the September 11, 2001, attacks. Texans continue to serve and the various installations across Texas continue to train service members to meet the nation’s needs. The structure and use of such installations has continued to change based on military needs and a number were closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure processes of the 1990s and mid-2000s. Texas National Guard units also experienced a variety of force changes and deployments in support of national needs during the period including the notable return of the 36th Infantry Division in place of the 49th Armored Division as forces adapt to meet present and future military needs. Many of the museums located on active installations as well as civilian institutions offer exhibits on recent conflicts.
