Universal reached an agreement with Sony Pictures to turn the spec "Passion of the Ark" into a sequel for "Bruce Almighty" (USA/2003) directed by Tom Shadyac and starring Jim Carrey.
Sony paid $1.5 million against $2.5 million for the spec by Bobby Florsheim and Josh Stolberg.
When Jim Carrey dropped out, Tom Shadyac and Steve Oedekerk re-worked to script to fit the character played by Steve Carell from the first movie.

Unexpected costs for visual effects and the logistical challenges of filming hundreds of live animals reportedly bumped the film's $140-million budget up to $175 million by the time it's finished. With marketing expenditures, the film is expected to cost at least $250 million.
