FAQ

The Stiegl Brewery was first mentioned in documents in 1492. For further details, read here.

The first brewery mentioned in documents from the year 1492 was not in Maxglan but in the middle of Salzburg Old Town. Next to this “Haus bey der Stiegen” (house by the stairs) on Gstättengasse was a small staircase, to which the Stiegl Brewery owes its name to this day.

Yes. Our beer experience world, the Stiegl-Brauwelt is open daily from 10:00 am to midnight. There, you can take a look behind the curtains, visit the museum or the Stiegl Brewery Shop, and indulge yourself in one of the three gastronomic areas.

Stiegl beer is available at food retailers, chosen gastronomic establishments, as well as at the Stiegl Beverage Shop and the Stiegl Online Shop.

You can get our exclusive house beers (Hausbiere) at the Stiegl Online Shop, in the Stiegl-Brauwelt Brewery Shop, at the Stiegl Beverage Shop, as well as at chosen food retailers. Our house beers can also be found at chosen gastronomic establishments – and, of course, at our Stiegl flagship companies.

Yes. You can order your Stiegl products around the clock from the Stiegl Online Shop and have them conveniently delivered to your home.

The Reinheitsgebot, or the beer purity law, has been around for over 500 years. It stipulates that only yeast, hops, and water may be used when brewing.

In the brewing process, yeast is responsible for fermentation and transforms malt sugar into alcohol and CO2, thereby creating heat. In principle, there are two kinds of beer yeasts: top-fermented and bottom-fermented yeast. Top-fermented yeast swims to the top during the fermentation process, whereas bottom-fermented yeast sinks to the bottom. Which yeast is used depends on the desired type of beer: For a wheat beer or a pale ale, you use a top-fermented yeast; however, if you want a lager or a pilsner, you go with bottom-fermented yeast. In order to guarantee consistent flavor, we at Stiegl cultivate our yeast cultures on our own. Read more about that here.

Original gravity refers to the ingredients dissolved by the malt in the beer wort before fermentation. The higher the original gravity, the higher the amount of dissolved malt content. Generally speaking, the higher the original gravity, the more full-bodied the beer. The original gravity also influences the beer’s alcohol and nutritional content.
At Stiegl, no compromises are made regarding original gravity: For more than 100 years, we have brewed our Stiegl Goldbräu with 12-degree original gravity. That is by no means a matter of course.

The Salzburg spring water from the region of Untersberg is an essential component of our Stiegl beers. For centuries, the crystal-clear mountain water has been supplying Stiegl with the purest quality and a water hardness of circa 10–12˚dH, which is perfect for brewing. Read more about that here.

Our Stiegl Paracelsus Gluten-Free is gluten-free thanks to a specially developed procedure using natural wheat and without the addition of technical enzymes. That makes it the perfect alternative for people with gluten intolerance. Read more about that here.

There is no single answer to this question as it differs between types and brands. Stiegl Goldbräu has 43 kcal or 180 kJ, which is less than a glass of Grüner Veltliner white wine.

The best-before date is stated on the bottom of the label. However, it should be noted that beer is a natural, fresh product and that the flavor, aroma, and coloring change over the course of prolonged storage. Heat and light speed up this process, which is why storage in a cool, dark place is essential for the best beer quality.

The common types of beer (lager, helles-style, pilsner, wheat beer) are fresh goods. That is, the fresher the beer, the better. But, in principle, beer can still be enjoyed after its best-before date if it is stored in a cool, dark place. However, as mentioned above, the taste and smell change over time. But at no time is beer harmful to health and it can be enjoyed without hesitation, even if the best-before date has long passed.

Many beer connoisseurs are, in fact, of the opinion that some types of beer develop a really good taste only after prolonged storage (cool & dark) well beyond the best-before date.  This applies above all to beers with a high alcohol content, such as Bock beer.

The preconception that you get a beer belly from beer is a widely held myth. A Stiegl Goldbräu has only 45 calories per 100 ml, which is fewer than a glass of wine or sparkling wine. However, the hops in beer stimulate the appetite, and the so-called beer belly does not come directly from the beer but due to an appetite for and the enjoyment of hearty food.
