Volkswagen Group in the UK - Statistics & Facts
Founded in 1937, shortly before the start of World War II, Volkswagen was initially established by the German Labour Front to build the VW Beetle, meant to become the most popular car in the country. Although its ownership was disputed after the war, Volkswagen was able to continue production in 1948 and has since grown to become the largest automobile manufacturer in the world.
In its 2018 fiscal year, the Volkswagen Group generated a sales revenue of 235.85 billion euros. This was the highest figure since the beginning of the reporting period, having steadily increased revenues since 2009, with the fallout of the diesel emissions scandal seeming to have little effect on the group's performance.
In the United Kingdom, Volkswagen held a 9.66 percent share of the new car market in July 2019, a decline compared to the same month the year previous. Nevertheless, the German carmaker was able to slowly grow its market presence compared to 2016, when market share oscillated around seven percent. In the first seven months of 2019, Volkswagen sold 126,074 passenger cars, putting it second behind U.S. brand Ford.
The VW Golf was the most ubiquitous of VW Group car models on British roads. As of the fourth quarter of 2018, some one million units were registered in Great Britain. By comparison, the Audi A3 was the most prominent Audi model found in the country, with licensed vehicle numbers having grown to 419,193 units.
In terms of commercial vehicle sales, Volkswagen had sold 56 small heavy goods vehicles with a gross weight between 3.5 and 6 metric tons by August 2019. The number of light commercial vehicles sold was significantly higher, amounting to 28,283 units in the same eight months period. This was mainly due to the continued popularity of its VW Transporter model.
