Cambodia still recovers from the regime of the Khmer Rouge, who incarcerated, tortured and killed thousands of Cambodians, and aimed to establish an isolated communist country under their rule. Led by the infamous Pol Pot, they had killed a quarter of the country's population by 1979.

The capital is among the most affordable cities for backpacking worldwide. Additionally, Phnom Penh also ranks high on the list for most affordable hotel rooms in Asian cities.
Evident in Cambodia reporting one of the highest rate of GDP growth rates worldwide, the country’s economy is continuing on an upward trend, with the services sector contributing the lion's share to the state's GDP. The most important import partner of Cambodia is China with a share of more than a third in all imports. The United States is the most important export partner for Cambodia, with a share of just over 20 percent in all exports.
