Coffee market in Europe - Statistics & Facts

Coffee is one of the most popular hot beverages in Europe and an important commodity worldwide. Coffee, prepared from roasted coffee beans, represents one of the key industries in several developing countries located in equatorial regions, such as Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia and Indonesia. The two types of coffee most commonly grown are Arabica and Robusta.

Coffee Consumption in Europe

People in the Netherlands have the highest per capita coffee consumption worldwide. Several other European countries are also among the leading coffee consumers. A particularly popular method of coffee preparation among Germans is the use of filter machines. The per capita consumption volume of coffee in Italy amounted to nearly five kilograms per year. Roast coffee makes up the majority of those, as compared to instant coffee. The total coffee consumption by Spanish households amounted to a total of approximately 83 million kilograms. Spanish people mostly preferred natural coffee and coffee blend, as opposed to instant- or decaffeinated coffee. While coffee is often consumed at home or at work, many consumers liked to enjoy their coffee on the go. The leading coffee shop chains in Europe are Costa and McCafé, both have over three thousand cafés across Europe. Starbucks closely follows with nearly 2.9 thousand cafés.

Coffee imports in Europe

Almost all of the world's coffee production takes place outside of Europe. In fact, most coffee is produced in South America and Asia. Given the high popularity of the hot beverage in Europe, eight of the ten leading coffee importing countries worldwide are from this region. The import volume of coffee in Germany has fluctuated between 1.1 and 1.2 million tons during the last decade. By comparison, in Norway, the import value of coffee and coffee substitutes has constantly increased during the last decade. Many European countries import their coffee from South America, such as Sweden where most coffee imports come from Brazil. In the United Kingdom, imports of coffee from the European Union make up a substantial amount.
