Online grocery shopping in the United Kingdom (UK) - statistics and facts
The leading supermarkets among Brits
Tesco, one of the UK’s most well-known supermarket brands, was used by more than half of online grocery shoppers in the country in 2023. The company’s website, tesco.com ranked number one both in e-commerce net sales and by the share of users who visit the site. Other popular brands in the UK online grocery scene included Sainsbury, Asda, and Ocado – an exclusively online grocery retailer that has managed to keep up with prominent supermarket chains.Although large players like Tesco and Sainsbury offer online delivery services, some shoppers may still be looking elsewhere. Keyword search trends in 2024 revealed that specialist online grocery stores were searched for thousands of times each month on Google, with interested users most often searching for Indian and Asian online grocery stores.
Grocery shopping goes hybrid
Currently, between physical and online stores, the physical option remains the most prominent way for shoppers to get their supermarket goods. However, the increased popularity of e-grocery, alongside the post-pandemic return to shopping in person has left many shoppers comfortably open to the idea of buying groceries and food online. Many consumers in the UK have comfortably adjusted to a more multichannel experience; only about seven percent of UK shoppers purchase their groceries exclusively online, while 59 percent only shop in physical stores. With the option to safely purchase in stores and avoid things like added delivery fees, waiting times, and potential mishaps in the delivery process, the hybrid approach to grocery shopping seems to be here to stay.
