As the legal markets for cannabis have expanded in the United States so too has the interest in edible forms. As cannabis consumers become more comfortable with cannabis as a retail product, the appeal of easier and safer forms of consumption is on the rise. Although flower is still the market leader, infused food and beverage products have been gaining market share. Their appeal is particularly strong among the younger generation, where a large minority of Americans have become consumers.
Edibles in the biggest markets
Edible cannabis is much more popular in the United States than in Canada, commanding nearly double the
market share of total retail sales. Part of the explanation for this may be that legal markets in the United States tend to have higher THC limits on edibles than Canada where it is capped at 10mg. Session
edible potency preferences are mostly below the 10mg limit among Americans but this is not to say that consumers aren't interested in high potency products that can be portioned. In California, the biggest legal market in the United States,
edibles make up about 12 percent of all sales.
Beverages preferred potent
Compared to edibles, the story is a little different when it comes to
cannabis-infused beverages. A slightly greater portion of consumers in Canada consume beverages than their American counterparts, 20 percent versus 17 percent. Again pointing to consumers being value conscious, by far the largest
share of cannabis beverage sales in the U.S. was commanded by products with a potency of 100mg to 109.99mg.
Younger consumers are most interested in cannabis-infused beverages with 19 percent of cannabis consumers between 18 and 34 years of age saying it was their preferred product type.
Growing interest in edibles
More consumers are signaling their interest in edible cannabis products as the market matures. Growth in
preference for edibles is occurring across age groups. It's possible that consumers took a black market mindset with them in the transition to the legal market, where purchasing flower was a wiser choice for product safety and authenticity. Now that legal markets have been established for some time, consumers are more interesting in exploring their options. Edibles are seeing unprecedented
penetration in the American public. A recent survey showed 22 percent of American adults between the ages of 18 and 34 years old consumed edible cannabis products. This is a much larger share than other age groups and shows the potential of this segment going forward.
