Performance of the big players
Compared to previous years, NorgesGruppen achieved an exceptionally high
operating profit in 2020 and 2021. In both years, the profit amounted to around five billion Norwegian kroner. Another major player, Coop Norge AS, also generated particularly high revenues in the same period. The Norwegian cooperative
peaked with operating revenues of approximately 60 billion Norwegian kroner. At the same time, Reitangruppen, a Norwegian company operating in Scandinavia, Finland, and the Baltic region, generated its
highest sales in Norway. One of its supermarket chains is Rema 1000, a chain operating in Norway and Denmark. That same year,
Rema 1000’s revenue reached a value of approximately 64 billion Norwegian kroner.
Spending capacity
Simultaneous with the steady increase in revenues of Norwegian grocery retailers, the
consumption expenditure of Norwegian households on food and non-alcoholic beverages also grew. A notable increase can be seen in the period from 2019 to 2021, which was also visible for
consumer spending on alcoholic beverages and tobacco. This is partly due to the coronavirus pandemic and its restrictions - people went out less and consumed more groceries at home - while price increases are another reason for this increase. Several factors play into the price increase, including increased energy costs, hidden price increases, as well as the difficult international political situation and labor shortages.
