Published in September 2020, cross-platform action RPG Genshin Impact has taken the world by storm and is now one of the top-grossing mobile gaming titles worldwide. Created and published by Shanghai-based video gaming company miHoYo, the game is available on mobile, PC, and PlayStation. Genshin Impact features an anime-style open-world environment and action-based combat which at launch has caused the game to be criticized for being a clone of Nintendo’s successful Zelda game Breath of the Wild. However, despite the initial similarities, Genshin Impact has quickly established itself as a unique game with high production values, an engaging story, several distinct in-game regions, and a very lively community of players.
In July 2023, the mobile app generated approximately 51 million U.S. dollars in in-app purchases. Genshin Impact also ranks among the fastest mobile games to generate 100 million U.S. dollars in player spending, a feat that the app managed in 13 days. The game is particularly popular in Asian gaming markets, with Genshin players in Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong being the highest spenders on mobile.
These annual region updates and a continuous flow of in-game events mark Genshin Impact as a live service game. These in-game events are time-limited and offer players exclusive item and lore rewards and once over, they cannot be played again, heightening players’ FOMO if they do not participate.

How does Genshin Impact make money?
