Medical tourism in Costa Rica increased around 400 percent between 2014 and 2019, going from 3,941 health travels in 2014 to 19,769 visits for medical purposes in 2019. However, only 6,457 people visited the country for medical reasons in 2021, the second lowest figure observed in the period.
