The number of deaths in Poland reached 409 thousand in 2023 and decreased by nearly nine percent compared to the previous year. In 2023, more than 10 people per 1000 inhabitants died.
Road traffic fatalities in Poland
In 2020, an overall decrease in road fatalities was observed in Poland, dropping from 4.493 deaths at the age of 25 to 64 in 1990 to 1.472 fatalities in that time. On the other hand, from 2000 to 2020, most road fatalities occurred on rural roads. Moreover, car occupants were the most likely to be victims of road traffic fatalities. Forty-seven of all those killed on the road were car drivers or passengers.
Infant deaths in Poland
The infant mortality rate is defined as the number of deaths of children under one year. The number of infant deaths in Poland from 1980 to 2022 has decreased. The highest mortality in 2022 occured among babies up to one year. However, by sex, the most increased mortality occurs in male infants, i.e., 665 boys against 506 girls. On the other hand, the mortality rate decreased with the birth of another child. In 2022, 453 babies died, being the mother’s first child. In the case of the birth of a fifth child or more, mortality increased to 38.
