The consumption volume of tea in India was approximately 1.2 billion kilograms during the financial year 2022. Consumption of this hot beverage has increased consistently throughout the years.
Tea production
India was the second largest producer of tea in the world after China. Of the entire tea production the majority comes from the north-eastern region of the country with Assam and West Bengal being the leading producers. The state of Assam is the world’s single largest tea-growing region. Among southern states of the country, Tamil Nadu was the highest producer of tea, most of which was grown in the hills of the Nilgiris district in the southern Western Ghats. The other tea-growing districts were Munnar and Wayanad in the south.
Popular tea brands
Most Indians usually start their day with a hot cup of either tea or coffee. Even though black tea is quite popular, most Indians prefer their brewed tea with milk, and sugar as a sweetener – what has now become popular as Chai Latte in cafés across the world. Tata Tea, Red Label, Lipton, Tetley and Taj Mahal were a few popular tea brands that are common in many households. According to number of views on YouTube in India, the tea brand Red Label India was the second most popular channel as of 2019.
