In 2022, the electricity generation capacity in Indonesia amounted to around 81.2 gigawatts. It was projected that the country would generate electricity of more than 500 terawatt-hours by 2027. Meeting the growing electricity needs is one of Indonesia's biggest challenges currently.
Electricity providers in Indonesia
Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the state-owned electricity supplier, is providing most of Indonesia's electricity, while the rest is accounted for by IPPs (Independent Power Producers) and PPUs (Private Power Utility). PLN also delivers the electricity generated by the IPPS and the PPUs. The PLN monopoly is still being reviewed, while IPPs are now allowed to enter the market. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, about two-thirds of the new electricity capacity is supposed to be generated by IPPs.
Electricity mix in Indonesia
Currently, the electricity mix in Indonesia is still heavily dependent on coal, followed by natural gas, renewables, and oil. The ongoing focus of the newly planned power plants is also mainly on fossil fuels. Despite the high potential of hydropower and geothermal energy in Indonesia, renewable power is not yet the main goal of their energy policy. Coal is expected by the government to continue to play a substantial role in the next decades.
