Share of media used as the main news source in Finland 2024
According to a 2024 survey, the internet remained the main news source for most Finns. The second most popular source of news was television, named by 31 percent of respondents. Other sources, such as printed media and radio, were used by less than ten percent of them as the main news source.
Websites and apps of newspapers are the most used news source
Although older age groups mainly followed the news on the television, Finnish people aged 54 years and younger increasingly used the internet as their main news source. Correspondingly, websites and apps of newspapers narrowly surpassed television as the most used source of news in 2024. In addition to news websites, the use of radio news broadcasts to follow the news became more popular among Finns between 2021 and 2024.
Decline in print newspapers amid digital transformation
The prevalence of internet-based news sources comes as Finland's newspaper industry faces ongoing changes. In 2022, the total number of newspapers in the country dropped to 274, continuing a decade-long decline from 324 titles in 2012. Local newspapers still comprise the largest share of print publications, with 155 titles, followed by free papers and other newspaper types. This gradual reduction in print offerings underscores the growing importance of digital platforms for news distribution.
