Consumer spending on clothing in Hungary 2008-2022

Hungarians considerably increased their spending on clothing items over the past years . As of 2022, household expenditure on clothing peaked at 766 billion forints.

Retail sales of clothes

  Since 2010, there have been fewer and fewer clothes retail stores operating in Hungary each year, with their number totaling approximately 12 thousand in 2022. During the same year, the retail sales of clothes and textiles amounted to 845 billion forints, representing a considerable increase compared to the previous year.

Clothes shopping habits

  People have different preferences when it comes to buying clothes as some value expensive designer brands, while others may find financial or environmental aspects more important. Considering people’s attitudes towards purchasing second-hand items, in 2020, every fifth Hungarian bought used fashion items in order to save money and a further 20 percent did so for a different reason. According to a survey conducted during the same year, the majority of Hungarians were agains purchasing counterfeit fashion items.
