Leading DIY retailers in Czechia 2020-2022, by number of stores
The number of leading home improvement stores in Czechia changed slightly between 2020 and 2022. The number of Baumax stores changed from 20 in 2020 to 23 in both 2021 and 2022. The DIY retailer with the most stores in 2022 was Mountfield, with 58 branches all over Czechia.
DIY retail market
DIY stands for “do-it-yourself.” As such, it denotes activities involving home decorating and repairing or making household items oneself at home. Therefore, DIY stores provide customers with the appropriate resources to enable these activities, among other additional household and home improvement items.
The number of DIY retail chains in Czechia in 2021 was rather low compared to other markets such as fashion & clothing or sports & leisure. However, the number of DIY retail stores increased in the past few years following a drop in 2017, which happened after the retail stores reached their record number of 92 in 2016. Similar trends could be observed in the total retail space of DIY stores, which reached its peak in 2012 already. With almost 650 thousand square meters in 2021, Czechia had the fifth largest DIY retail store space in Central and Eastern Europe.
Major DIY retail chains
The largest DIY retail chains in Czechia were owned mostly by German companies. They dominated the Czech DIY retail market and ranked among the biggest players in the European market. In 2021, Obi, Bauhaus, and Hornbach were the third, fourth, and fifth DIY retailers with the highest revenues in Europe, respectively, placing behind the British Kingfisher and the French Groupe Adeo. Obi also ranked fifth among the European DIY retailers with the most stores. Out of their total 673 stores, 33 could be found in Czechia, a share of almost five percent. The only Czech DIY retailer on this list was UNI HOBBY.
