Number of pet stores in Canada by region 2022

As of December 2022, Ontario was home to the most pet and pet supplies stores across the country. At that time, there were 845 such stores in the Canada’s most populous province. Quebec and British Columbia, the second and third most populous provinces, came second and third with 544 and 375 stores, respectively.

Are brick-and-mortar pet stores still necessary?

In short, yes. While e-commerce use is on the rise and becoming more frequent, many consumers still buy pet products in physical stores. In 2020, for example, the majority Canadians confirmed that they mostly bought pet food supplies in-store. Approximately 20 percent consumers in Canada mostly bought their pet food online.

Pet specialty chains in North America

There are many pet specialty chains to be found on the continent of North America, such as Pet Supermarket, Woof Gang Bakery, Pet Planet, Mud Bay, and so on. However, the majority of market is controlled by two major players, namely PetSmart and Petco, both of which are companies from the United States. Each of these giants accounted for over 1,500 stores across North America.
