Carbon dioxide emissions from energy in Russia 2012-2023
In 2023, carbon dioxide emissions from energy in Russia amounted to approximately 1.61 billion metric tons of CO2, marking an increase relative to the previous year. Russia’s territorial carbon dioxide emissions per capita grew by 13 percent between 2000 and 2022.
Greenhouse gas emissions in Russia
Russia accounted for five percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions in 2023, ranking behind China, the United States, and India. The energy sector was the largest emitter, followed by industrial production, agriculture, and waste management. On the other hand, the land use and forestry sector absorbed approximately 485 million tons of CO2 equivalent in 2021.
Environmental concerns
In a 2021 survey conducted among Russians, almost a half considered their place of residence to have an unfavorable environmental situation. Environmental issues also ranked high on companies' agenda. In 2021, approximately a one in two surveyed specialists from large companies mentioned reducing the carbon footprint and reducing air emissions as key priorities.
