While in many countries in the European Union the amount of automated teller machines (ATMs) dropped steadily over the 2000 to 2023 period, it fluctuated to some extent in Portugal at the end of this period. Over all, however, the number decreased over time. As of the end of 2023, there were approximately 13.7 thousand cash machines operational in the country. Although the use of cash dropped in Portugal between 2014 and 2019, cash payments still account for around 37 percent of payments in retail.
