Number of movie theaters in Spain 2010-2024
In 2024, there were 752 movie theaters across Spain, up from 751 in 2023 – an increase of just 1 point. The 2023 figure was the highest since 2013 when 745 cinema sites operated in the European country. Spain's leading movie theater chains by revenue in 2020 included Cinesa, Yelmo, and Multicines Atlántida Lanzarote.
Foreign versus domestic movies in Spain
Spanish cinemas have slowly recovered from the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak, but their results remained distant from the figures seen prior to COVID-19. Foreign films' box office revenue in Spain grew by 75 percent in 2021, standing above 200 million euros. Meanwhile, Spanish movies continued to struggle. Domestic feature films' box office gross in Spain increased by less than one percent in 2021, falling behind 40 million euros for the second consecutive year. For comparison, between 2014 and 2018, the annual figure always surpassed 100 million euros.
Spain among the world's top film industries
Despite the tepid recovery, Spain was forecast to register one of the highest growth rates in filmed entertainment revenue worldwide during the first half of the 2020s, above 130 percent. If confirmed, this outstanding performance would keep the European country among the leading markets on the global stage. Spain would stand in the top 15 filmed entertainment industries by 2025, with almost 1.7 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.
