This statistic shows the evolution of wine consumption in France from 2005 to 2021. Wine consumption in France reached a peak of 33.5 million hectoliters in 2005. By 2021, wine consumption had fallen to approximately 25.2 million hectoliters.
Wine is one of the most beloved drinks in France, and that comes with no surprise as France is one of the largest wine producers in the world. Since Roman times, France has been contributing to building up a reputation as “the country of wine” and has done its best to embrace the culture of winemaking.
Consumption
Over the years, the consumption of wine in France has decreased from 33 million liters in 2005 to 24.7 million liters in 2020, before rising again slightly in 2021. This is also the case for the consumption per capita. A French consumer used to drink 50 liters of wine in 2007, whereas the consumption went down to 47 liters per capita in 2021.
Shopping behavior
Every French home has a special place for wine. A special mention should be made of wine with a Protected Designation of Origin (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) and without geographical indication (Sans Indication Géographique). In 2021, a French household purchased annually around 19.3 bottles of PDO wine, compared to 14.35 bottles of SIG wine.
When it comes to price, the French spent more money on a liter of PDO wine, around 7.30 euros a liter in 2021. In contrast, a liter of IGP wine amounted to three euros on average in the same year.
