In 2021, PSA International was the world's largest terminal operator. The Singapore-headquartered company's container throughput volume came to about 63.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2021.
Cargo handling at ports
Advancing the frontiers of global trade routes requires a strong transportation network and infrastructure. Ports play a crucial role and achieving high efficiency and service quality for ports could be an arduous task. In 2018, Singapore, Finland, and the Netherlands were the countries with the highest quality of seaport service infrastructure. Globally, there were nearly 1.9 million port calls by roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ships in 2018. With over 205,000 port calls, China accounted for over ten percent of the total, while Japan and the Netherlands ranked second and third, respectively. In that same period, roughly 11 billion metric tons of goods were traded by maritime transport in Asia.
PSA International
Headquartered in Singapore, Port Singapore Authority (PSA) International is a leading port operator worldwide, with ports across Asia, America, and Europe. The company was founded in 1964 to replace the previous operator of the Singapore port. As the country prospered, so did PSA International. Since 2009, the amount of containerized cargo handled by PSA International terminals has rapidly increased, reaching over 82 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2018. Yet, its revenues fluctuated around four billion Singapore dollars between 2009 and 2018.
