Between 2014 and 2018, global expenditures for autoimmune agents and diabetes have each increased by about 15 percent. Spending for major therapeutic classes, such as mental health and hypertension, decreased slightly within the measured period.
Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which a person’s pancreas fails to produce insulin, causing high blood sugar levels, which in turn causes major health complications if left untreated. Worldwide, about 460 million people (aged 20 to 79) had the condition in 2019, and that number is projected to grow to 700 million by 2045. Roughly a third of the world’s diabetics were located in the Western Pacific region in 2019.
Mental health
There are various types of health issues facing people around the world today. Some of the common mental problems include anxiety disorders, depression, and eating disorders. In 2018, almost thirty percent of adults worldwide stated that mental health was the largest issue facing people in their respective countries. By far the biggest health concern worldwide was cancer that year.
