The wildfire that struck the island of Maui, Hawaii in August 2023 resulted in 115 fatalities (as of August 2022), making it the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. for more than a century, and the fifth deadliest in its history. 2023 recorded the highest number of deaths from wildfires in the U.S. for more than three decades, owing to the high loss of life in Maui that year.
