In 2022, global direct carbon dioxide emissions from heavy and medium-duty trucks increased by 2.4 percent to 1.8 billion metric tons (GtCO₂). Although freight trucks represent a small share of vehicles, they were responsible for roughly 25 percent of global transportation CO₂ emissions in 2022. Heavy-duty trucks emitted roughly twice the amount of CO₂ as medium-duty trucks in 2022, at 1.2 GtCO₂.
