Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU-27) were estimated at 787 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in Q3 2023. The economic sectors responsible for the largest shares of emissions that quarter were manufacturing and electricity and gas supply, with 22 and 18 percent, respectively. However, the most polluting sector varies throughout the year. For example, emissions from household activities typically increase in Q1 of each year and account for roughly 25 percent of total emissions that quarter. This is mostly due to increased energy consumption during the colder winter months.

This metadata refers to the dataset Air emissions accounts for greenhouse gases by NACE Rev. 2 activity - quarterly data.
This dataset reports greenhouse gases emissions into the atmosphere due to economic activities of resident units (businesses, families and government). Greenhouse gases emitted by the entire national economy are covered. The greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and fluorinated gases. The emissions are broken down by emitter categories related to the NACE Rev.2 classification of economic activities.
The quarterly estimates are modelled based on annual environmental accounting data.
Natural flows of residual gaseous are excluded e.g. volcanos, forest fires. Also excluded are air emissions arising from land use, land use changes and forestry as well as any indirect emissions.
