Mobile wallet penetration was much higher in Asia than in Europe, according to a survey held in 2023 across multiple territories. Indeed, nine of the 10 top countries in terms of mobile wallet adoption were from Asia-Pacific - with the top two being from Southeast Asia. Saudi Arabia was the first non-Asian country in the list, found in position nine. Sweden was the first country from Europe to feature in this overview, in position 22. Unlike Asia-Pacific or the Middle East, mobile wallets in Europe and North America compete against existing digital payment systems such as credit cards or debit cards. In emerging countries, wallets are the first digital payment method to come into existence.
