In 2021, the number of electrochemical energy storage projects in Europe amounted to 573, up from just eight in 2011. While electrochemical energy storage experienced a substantial growth during the period of consideration, pumped hydropower energy storage projects only increased by 44 units since 2011. The growing trend in pumped hydro projects, which are expected to be widely replaced by electrochemical technologies, was due to the European investments in hydropower, after the shut-down of several coal and nuclear power plants.
The energy storage capacity in Europe is forecast to reach 26 gigawatts by 2030 and to continue growing in the following decade.
