Meanwhile, the smallest segment was that of HVAC-R equipment manufacturers, with just 1,672 establishments. However, the segment with the highest number of establishments with 500 employees or more was plumbing and HVAC hardware, equipment, and supplies wholesalers.

The numbers provided are on "establishments", not "firms". The source makes a distinct difference between the two, naming the first as the economical unit that provides the service whereas the second is the legal entity - which can consist of multiple establishments.
