After five years of a slight to moderate growth in the number of passengers passing through European Union (EU-27) ports, 2020 saw a dramatic decline in passenger traffic. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, about half as many passengers were embarking and disembarking in EU ports in 2020 than in 2019. The year 2021 saw an increase in passenger traffic in the EU: about 16 percent more passengers passed through EU ports in 2021 compared with 2020.
