Annual number of POS terminals in Mexico 2012-2022
The total number of POS payment devices available in Mexico declined by roughly 15 percent between 2021 and 2022. This meant that the acceleration seen in the previous period - 2018 to 2020 - slowed down significantly when compared to the years leading up to the coronavirus pandemic. Mexico is widely regarded as an upcoming country when it comes to in-store payments, something that is somewhat reflected in a global comparison of mobile contactless payments. Here, Mexico did observe an increase in the use of so-called proximity mobile payments - or the scanning of POS terminals using a mobile device - but the overall market share was lower than, for example, Germany or Brazil.
