At about 729 million metric tons, Indonesia accounted for the biggest CO2 emissions in Southeast Asia in 2022, making the country one of the five largest CO2 emitters in the Asia-Pacific region. China is the leading country of the region, which produced roughly 10.5 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions and thus made up more than half of the total CO2 emissions of the Asia-Pacific region in 2022.
Which sector produced the most emissions?
Most of the CO2 in the Asia-Pacific region was emitted by the electricity and heat producing sector. The generation of electricity accounted for around 8.4 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions. In total, the Asia-Pacific region produced 17.96 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions from energy, which was more than the combined total emissions from energy of all other regions worldwide in 2022.
The Indonesian energy sector
Although it has the second-highest level of biodiversity in the world, Indonesia is also one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters. This is largely due to deforestation and carbon-intensive electricity generation. Emissions from the energy sector amounted to more than 206 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2022, which is about one-fourth of the country’s total CO2 emissions.

(in million metric tons of CO2)
Territorial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions: CO2 emissions assigned to the country where they are physically released.
Carbon dioxide emissions from the use of coal, oil and gas (combustion and industrial processes), the process of gas flaring and the manufacture of cement.
