As of 2023, iron ore was the most voluminously produced of the minerals that are used in the production of batteries, at 1.5 billion metric tons of iron content. Nevertheless, iron ore has many uses beyond batteries. Lithium, a critical material for battery production with up to half of its consumption attributed to that purpose, had a much lower production volume that year. Global lithium production amounted to 180 thousand metric tons (excluding U.S. production) in 2023.
