Student loans were the biggest obstacle delaying American homebuyers from saving for a down payment, a July 2023 survey among recent homebuyers found. About 17 percent of respondents found saving for a down payment was the most challenging part of the process, with over one third pointing out childcare expenses as the leading reason. Moreover, the youngest group of homebuyers reported high rent/current mortgage payment and student loans as the biggest obstacles.
